One pin says "Assembly of God." The one down the street says "Pentecostal." You want to know one thing: will Sunday feel the same?
Short answer: every Assemblies of God church is Pentecostal. Not every Pentecostal church is Assemblies of God. AG is one brand under a big umbrella. The pin that just says "Pentecostal" could be AG's cousin, or a very different branch.
Here's how to tell which one you're tapping before you leave the house.
Is Assemblies of God Pentecostal? Yes. On paper.
This isn't a fuzzy one. AG says it out loud.
- Started: 1914, at a meeting of Pentecostal ministers in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
- Home base: Springfield, Missouri.
- Family tree: It's the U.S. branch of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, often called the largest Pentecostal body in the world.
- The Pentecostal core, in its own words: Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a separate experience that comes after you're saved. And speaking in tongues is the "initial physical evidence" of it. That's #7 and #8 in AG's Statement of Fundamental Truths.
That last part matters. AG doesn't shrug on tongues. It's official teaching, and AG requires it of its ministers. But you don't have to speak in tongues to visit, and in general not to join, either.
So "is Assemblies of God and Pentecostal the same?" Same family. AG is one specific household in it.
So what's behind a plain "Pentecostal" pin?
Could be a lot of things. "Pentecostal" is the family name. Here are the big households you'll run into:
Assemblies of God. Believes in the Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). Tongues as the first sign of Spirit baptism. Sees holiness as a lifelong process, not a single moment.
Church of God (Cleveland, TN) and other Holiness Pentecostals. Also Trinitarian. Also teaches tongues as the initial evidence. The difference: they teach sanctification as its own step after salvation, a second work of God. AG doesn't. Sunday may look a lot alike. Holiness churches sometimes keep stricter lifestyle standards.
Oneness or "Jesus' name" Pentecostals. The United Pentecostal Church International (UPCI) and many churches that call themselves Apostolic. Pentecostal, yes. AG, no. AG took its stand for the Trinity in 1916, and the Oneness side walked out. They baptize "in Jesus' name" only. We break that branch down in Apostolic vs Pentecostal and Assemblies of God vs Apostolic.
Foursquare. Another Trinitarian Pentecostal denomination. Close cousin to AG. Here's the side-by-side: Assemblies of God vs Foursquare.
Independent and "Full Gospel" churches. No national label. Beliefs live on their website, not their sign.
How to tell from the listing
Thirty seconds on the listing beats a 40-minute drive to the wrong room.
Name has "Assembly of God," "Assemblies of God," "First Assembly," or "AG"? It's AG. Trinitarian. Tongues as the first sign of Spirit baptism.
Name has "UPC," "United Pentecostal," "Apostolic," or "Jesus' Name"? Usually Oneness. Not AG.
Name has "Church of God" with Cleveland, TN ties? Holiness Pentecostal. Trinitarian, not AG.
Just "Pentecostal" or "Full Gospel"? Could be anything. Click "What we believe" and look for two lines: the baptism wording ("Father, Son, and Holy Spirit" vs "in Jesus' name") and who they're affiliated with.

Will Sunday feel the same?
Same family, so a lot will rhyme. Hands up during worship. Prayer out loud. An altar call at the end. Nobody expects a first-timer to join in. Sitting and watching is fine everywhere.
Here's where an AG room often lands next to the rest of the family:
| Typical AG church | Other Pentecostal rooms | |
|---|---|---|
| Music | Band, screens, modern worship songs | Ranges from organ and choir to full band |
| Dress | Mostly come-as-you-are. Jeans are normal | Many are casual. Oneness and some Holiness churches lean modest: skirts, slacks |
| Tongues | Taught. Often heard in prayer times or the altar call, quieter in big Sunday services | Can be more out-loud and frequent, especially in Oneness and smaller churches |
| Length | Often 75 to 90 minutes | 90 minutes to 2 hours is common. Some run longer |
| Baptism words | Father, Son, and Holy Spirit | Same in Trinitarian churches. "In Jesus' name" in Oneness churches |
| Women preaching | AG ordains women as pastors | Varies by group |
A real caveat: AG churches range a lot. Some feel like a polished suburban megachurch. Some feel like an old-school revival with a long altar time on Sunday night. The listing photos and the service length on the website will tell you which.
Dress question still bugging you? What to wear to church. Planning your day around it? How long is church.
Quick answers
Is Assemblies of God Pentecostal or evangelical? Both. It's Pentecostal in what it teaches about the Holy Spirit. And it was a founding member of the National Association of Evangelicals back in 1942. You'll hear AG folks call themselves either word.
Is Assemblies of God charismatic? Kind of, but not the label. "Charismatic" usually means Spirit-filled believers in other churches (Catholic, Methodist, nondenominational). AG is "classical Pentecostal," the older, original stream. The worship can feel the same.
Is Assemblies of God Oneness Pentecostal? No. AG is firmly Trinitarian. It split with the Oneness movement in 1916.
Assemblies of God vs United Pentecostal: what's the difference? God and baptism. AG: one God in three persons, baptism in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. UPCI: Oneness, baptism in Jesus' name, with tongues tied to being born again. UPCI churches also tend to keep stricter dress standards.
Is AG a denomination? Officially it calls itself a "fellowship." Local churches run themselves and call their own pastors, but they sign on to shared beliefs and answer to regional districts.
