Here's a fun one. A white church with a red door says "United Methodist." Half a mile away, a low building with big windows says "Unitarian Universalist." Both start at 10. Both say "all are welcome."
They mean it in very different ways.
The Methodist church is a Christian hour, built on the Trinity, hymns, and Communion. The UU congregation is a room with no creed, where the person next to you might be Christian, Buddhist, or atheist. Neither is "better." You just want to know which Sunday you're walking into before you park.
Unitarian Universalist vs Methodist in 30 seconds
Methodist: Christian. Comes out of John Wesley's 1700s revival in England. Believes in one God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Sunday centers on Scripture, a sermon, hymns, and regular Communion.
Unitarian Universalist (UU): No creed. People come with all kinds of beliefs, and nobody has to sign on to one. Sunday is readings, music, reflection, and a sermon. No sacraments at the center.
If you searched "unitarian vs methodist," that's the core of it. One shares a faith. The other shares values.
The quick comparison
| Methodist (United Methodist) | Unitarian Universalist | |
|---|---|---|
| Christian? | Yes | Some members are. The movement as a whole doesn't require it |
| God | The Trinity: Father, Son, Holy Spirit | Up to you. Theist, agnostic, atheist all fit |
| Beliefs | Shared doctrine and creeds | No creed. Six shared values, with Love at the center |
| Baptism | Yes, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Infants and adults | Not a requirement. Some hold child dedications |
| Communion | Yes. Open table | Usually none |
| Who runs it | Connectional. Bishops appoint pastors to churches | Each congregation governs itself and calls its own minister |
| Pastor | Appointed, often moves every several years | Called by the congregation, can stay a long time |
What a Methodist Sunday feels like
Length. About an hour. Many churches run a traditional service and a contemporary one at different times. Check the listing.
The flow. A welcome, hymns or a worship band, prayer, Bible readings, and a sermon. Many churches say the Lord's Prayer together. Some say the Apostles' Creed.
Communion. Methodists call it an open table. The United Methodist Church teaches that Christ is the host, and the invitation goes to "all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin, and seek to be at peace with one another." Christians from any church are welcome. If you aren't baptized, you aren't turned away, but the church will encourage baptism. How often it happens varies. Many churches do it monthly, some weekly. Skipping it is totally fine.
Vibe. Warm, a little Main Street. Lots of churches have a choir, a kids' program during the sermon, and a fellowship time after.
One label note. Not every "Methodist" sign means United Methodist. You'll also see Global Methodist, African Methodist Episcopal (AME), AME Zion, and Free Methodist churches. They share Wesley's roots but differ in practice. Our Methodist church finder helps you sort the pins.
What a UU Sunday feels like
Length. About an hour, usually one service around 10 or 10:30.
The flow. Many services start by lighting a flaming chalice, the UU symbol. Then music, readings, and a sermon. The readings might be a poem, a passage from the Bible or the Buddha, or a bit of science writing. Many congregations share "joys and concerns," where people name what's happening in their lives.
No test to pass. No creed to recite. Nothing you're not allowed to join in on.
Coffee hour. Basically sacred. If you want to meet people, stay.
What they believe now. In June 2024, UU delegates voted 80.2% to replace the former Seven Principles with six shared values: Interdependence, Pluralism, Justice, Transformation, Generosity, and Equity, with Love at the center. If an older member quotes "the Seven Principles," that's why.
Is Unitarian Universalism Christian?
Not as a whole. It grew out of Christian roots. Unitarians and Universalists were both 1700s and 1800s Protestant movements in America, and they joined as the Unitarian Universalist Association in 1961. Today it's a non-creedal faith that includes Christians but doesn't require being one.
A widely shared UU handout, 100 Questions That Non-Members Ask About Unitarian Universalism, ballparks Christians at around 20% of UUs. Treat that as a rough number, not a census.
Also: UU isn't Unity Church, and it isn't the Biblical Unitarian movement. Different groups, similar-sounding names.
Do Unitarian Universalists believe in Jesus?
Some do, as Savior. Many honor him as a great teacher. Some don't think about him much at all. There's no official answer, and that's the point.
Methodists have an official answer: Jesus is the Son of God, and the whole service points to him.
Can a Methodist attend a UU church (or the other way around)?
Anyone can visit either. Nobody checks ID at the door.
The honest part: a Methodist church will expect a Christian service, and a UU congregation won't. If you're Methodist and curious, you'll find a friendly room, but it won't feel like your home church. If you're UU and visiting a Methodist church, expect hymns about Jesus and an invitation to Communion. Taking it or skipping it is your call.

How to read the listing
- "United Methodist," "UMC," "First Methodist," "Wesley" in the name: Methodist. Probably a Christian hymn-and-sermon Sunday.
- "AME," "Global Methodist," "Free Methodist": still Methodist family, different branch.
- "Unitarian Universalist," "UU," "Unitarian Church," "UU Fellowship": UU. Expect a chalice, no creed.
- "Unity": a different group. Not UU.
- Check the website. Look for service times, a "What we believe" page, and whether there's a contemporary service. Then confirm the time that week.
Before you go
- Dress is casual to business casual at both. Here's what to wear to church.
- Plan on about an hour. How long church usually runs.
- Times shift in summer. What time church usually starts.
