Apostolic vs Pentecostal: Is Apostolic Pentecostal?

Yes, Apostolic is a branch of Pentecostal, but not every Pentecostal church is Apostolic. Here's how to tell which one a Maps pin is from the sign and listing, and what Sunday feels like in each.

Two pins on the map. One says Pentecostal. One says Apostolic. Same thing?

Short answer: Apostolic is usually a branch of Pentecostal. Every Apostolic church in this sense is Pentecostal. Not every Pentecostal church is Apostolic. Think umbrella and branch.

This post shows you how to tell which room you're walking into from the sign and the listing. Then what Sunday actually looks like in each.

Is Apostolic Pentecostal? Yes. It's a branch.

"Pentecostal" is the umbrella. It covers churches that put the Holy Spirit up front: lively worship, prayer for healing, and speaking in tongues. Assemblies of God, Foursquare, Church of God in Christ (COGIC), Church of God (Cleveland, TN). All Pentecostal.

"Apostolic," the way most people search it, means Oneness Pentecostal. Same umbrella, different branch. The biggest group is the United Pentecostal Church International (UPCI). You'll also see the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) and lots of independent "Apostolic" churches.

How the branch split off, in two lines:

  • The Assemblies of God adopted a statement affirming the Trinity in October 1916, at the height of the "New Issue" fight over baptism wording. About a third of its ministers left and formed Oneness churches.
  • The UPCI came later, in 1945, from a merger of two Oneness groups.

So when someone asks "is Apostolic Pentecostal?" the honest answer is yes. When someone asks "is Pentecostal Apostolic?" the answer is usually no.

The one real difference: how they talk about God and baptism

Everything else flows from this.

Trinitarian Pentecostals (AG, Foursquare, COGIC, Church of God, and most churches that just say "Pentecostal") believe in one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Baptism usually uses those three names.

Apostolic / Oneness Pentecostals believe God is one, revealed as Father, Son, and Spirit, and fully revealed in Jesus. They baptize "in the name of Jesus," pointing to Acts 2:38.

The other fork is tongues.

  • Most Trinitarian Pentecostal groups expect tongues as the first sign of Spirit baptism. But they treat that as a later step for power, not a requirement to be saved. How much a given church presses it varies.
  • Apostolic churches usually teach a three-part new birth: repent, get baptized in Jesus' name, receive the Holy Spirit with tongues. That's the UPCI's own summary of its gospel.

Not your job to settle this before Sunday. Just know it's the line.

How to read the sign (and the Maps listing)

Here's the cheat sheet. These are clues, not guarantees. Always click into the listing.

You see this on the sign or listingUsually means
"Apostolic," "Apostolic Pentecostal," "Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ"Oneness branch
"United Pentecostal Church," "UPC," "UPCI"Oneness branch
"PAW," "Pentecostal Assemblies of the World"Oneness branch
"Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ," "Jesus Name," "Jesus' Name Church"Oneness branch
"Acts 2:38" on the sign, website, or bioOneness branch, almost always
"Assemblies of God," "AG"Trinitarian Pentecostal
"Foursquare"Trinitarian Pentecostal
"Church of God in Christ," "COGIC"Trinitarian Pentecostal
"Church of God" with Cleveland, TN tiesTrinitarian Pentecostal
Just "Pentecostal" or "Full Gospel"Could be either. Check the beliefs page

Two traps:

  • "Pentecostal" alone tells you nothing about the branch. A UPC church and an AG church both say Pentecostal.
  • "Apostolic" isn't always Oneness. Some Trinitarian churches use the word too. One line settles it: find the baptism wording on their "What we believe" page. "Father, Son, and Holy Spirit" means Trinitarian. "In Jesus' name" means Oneness.

What Sunday looks and feels like

Both rooms run warm. Expect a band or organ, people standing, hands raised, prayer out loud, and a long altar call at the end. Nobody expects a visitor to join in. Sitting and watching is fine.

Where they often differ:

Dress. This is the biggest thing a visitor will notice. Many Apostolic churches keep holiness standards. Women often wear skirts or dresses, long hair, little or no makeup or jewelry. Men often wear slacks and collared shirts. Most Trinitarian Pentecostal churches today are come-as-you-are. Jeans are normal. For an Apostolic visit, a modest skirt or dress (women) and slacks (men) means you won't stand out. Nobody should hassle a guest either way. More here: what to wear to church.

Length. Plan on 90 minutes to 2 hours for either one, sometimes longer. Apostolic services often stretch more, because worship and the altar call go until they're done. Don't book lunch at 12:15.

Tongues. You may hear it in both. In many Apostolic churches it's more common out loud during worship and the altar call, because receiving the Spirit is part of their new-birth teaching. In many Trinitarian Pentecostal churches it's there but quieter, or saved for prayer time.

Altar call. Both have one. Apostolic altar calls are often longer, with people praying at the front for a long stretch. You can stay in your seat.

Baptism. If a baptism happens while you're there, listen to the words. That's the fastest tell of which branch you're in.

Not the same thing: New Apostolic Church

If you see "New Apostolic Church" on the map, that's a different family. It started in Germany in 1863 out of the Catholic Apostolic Church. It's led by apostles with a Chief Apostle at the top. It holds to the Trinity. Its services are calmer and more structured. It is not Pentecostal and not part of the Oneness branch. Different room entirely.

Quick answers

Is Apostolic Trinitarian? The Oneness branch is not. A few churches use "Apostolic" in their name and are Trinitarian. Check the baptism wording.
