We attended a Christmas craft and bake sale. Wonderful bakery goods such as baklava. Then asked if we could see the church. It is so special and a member shared about the church and historic Christian link.

St. Elias is the Greek name for Elijah the old testament prophet. This church is the home of a pan-Orthodox community that serves the greater La Crosse-Winona area. It was founded in 1912 by St. Raphael Hawaweeny of Brooklyn who was the first Orthodox bishop elevated on American soil. The community has Syrian & Lebanese roots but many of the members today have other diverse backgrounds including converts to the Orthodox Christian faith. There is original hand-painted iconography throughout the historic building. The construction is humble but highly dignified. There is an effort to expand due to the parish’s continued growth. They also host a popular Mediterranean / Middle Eastern fest every summer. Liturgy begins around 9:50AM every Sunday. Visitors are welcome, come and see!

Their annual St. Elias Greek Festival in July is anticipated because of the FOOD!! Oh, yumma with items I can't pronounce but love them. The congregation members make all the desserts and if you don't get there early enough, the baklava and favorites will disappear! I eat a meal there and make sure that I take home a takeout meal to enjoy for a couple days after.

Beautiful church built by my Grand Father "Habib Wakim (Wakeen)" in 1907. Only one of his children was able to visit in 2003. Habib died in 1930 in Lebanon leaving a widow and 4 children. My father Wakim Wakim was 3 at that time. We heard about the church growing up in Lebanon but were never able to visit until 1993 my 1st visit to the US. I wasn't sure the church existed until I met one of the oldest relatives in Lacrosse "Joseph Wakeen" who was in his 80s and was the one that confirmed the story. He also added that my grand father built another church that was destroyed in a fire in the 80s. In 2003 my wife and I brought my father to visit and met one of his cousins Raymond Wakeen... Now I have to bring my twin boys to visit...
