I spent a lot of time at a different church, calling it "home" because I wanted it to actually, eventually, feel like "home" and I wanted to have authentic connections. I was trying to speak it into existence by speaking life into my experience there. I was advised by several people who had bad experiences there to leave sooner than later, but I have never been a fickle/fair-weather church family member, so I tried to stick it out. When it was time, God finally closed that door and immediately (within minutes!) told me to take my family to Lighthouse. I had visited Lighthouse many years prior, and because I never drive past it, had forgotten all about it. From the moment we walked through the doors, we were received very warmly by every person there, and did not have to work to "fit in." Several months have passed, and this has not changed. We have formed more relationships in this short time than all the years in the former place. The leadership is truly humble, do not badmouth others (especially from the pulpit) and are not afraid to share their imperfections and remind us that we're all works in progress who have not "arrived," but are striving to be more like Jesus daily. They are mature believers who understand the importance of healing relationships when issues arise instead of throwing already hurting people away. Lighthouse is God's church, not man's church, and all of the leaders prioritize God's agenda and people's care. Any organization's people cannot help but be a reflection of its leadership, so where there is an air of superiority in some of the leadership, the same will be found in the members. Where people encourage the support of pedestals, subordinates will consider it "holy" and "good" to erect and protect those pedestals. Where there is humility and love for all people in the leaders, there will be humility and love for all people in the members. The leaders at Lighthouse spend zero time talking about how wonderful and inviting they are, because they don't have to sell themselves. The proof is in the atmosphere, the environment, and the experience. I am happy to call Lighthouse "home" and know that it truly, already is.
