If I’ve learned anything from being part of this community, it’s that our limited perspectives — our theological fortresses, brick walls, and tidy boxes — can hinder us to the fullness of a God who is far bigger, more expansive, unexpected, and inclusive than we can imagine. Common Table taught me to find God in the ordinary: in the glow of prayer candles, the breaking of bread, the reciting of prayers aloud with others, the baptismal font, pruning plants at a community garden, or singing with friends. After growing up in a faith that often sought God in spectacle, I’ve come to see that the divine shows up in stillness, simplicity, and the sacredness all around us. This church became my field guide in my time in the wilderness. I never lost my faith, but I definitely felt disillusioned by much of what I grew up with: rigid certainties, a success-driven, consumeristic Gospel, lasers and fog machines, and the insular boundaries of “my personal Savior” theology. So many of us who have gone through deconstruction, reconstruction, and faith evolution found a refuge at Common Table. I’m grateful for Pastors Stephen Poore and Drew Wilson, and for everyone who makes up this beautiful, challenging, and sacred space. This community invited me to see my faith as part of a larger and interconnected body, a faith that can be a prophetic witness in a world that is often unjust, noisy, divided, and shortsighted. The word “liturgy” means “the work of the people,” and there’s no better word to describe this community.

Whether you’ve gone to church for decades or days, you belong here. Whether you love hymns or contemporary songs, you belong here. If you’ve never said The Great Thanksgiving…you belong here! If you have no idea what any of that means, YOU BELONG HERE. This church welcomes and affirms all people from all walks of life. Whenever I’m in Richmond I make a point to worship here. Preaching is casual and fun and the atmosphere is perfect for Sunday morning. A safe and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ folks and for those who believe and don’t believe.

Many of the places I've worshipped have 'talked the talk,' claiming to be true followers of Christ. This is the first place I've ever been that actually walks the walk. From suspending services once a quarter so that we could do works in the community, to actually living and serving in the communities most in need, to welcoming all as TRUE followers of Christ would. . . I can't say enough about what a wonderful church this is.

The best thing about Center Church is that there are no barriers to participating. Whether you are somebody who’s been burned by a church in the past, somebody who’s spent their entire life in a church, or somebody who’s never been involved in a faith institution in any capacity, the people you meet want to get to know you and want you to be a part of what’s going on there. Certainly a big part of that posture is the natural response to a common spiritual experience, but another big part of it is a collective understanding that there are just too many injustices in Richmond and the individual lives of its citizens to simply ignore. Center Church attempts to address these injustices by taking some Sundays to improve conditions at local schools or to clean up some of the city’s beloved spots. It addresses these injustices by executing specifically targeted fundraising campaigns with measurable results, such as conducting book drives to stock the shelves of poorly-funded public schools with books for its students. And it addresses these injustices in numerous other ways by giving away 20% of every dollar it receives back to the community through various non-profits, both secular and religious, with a track record of doing successful things for the city. Center Church is full of people who care about these things despite looking different from one another and despite coming from every background imaginable. I am thrilled to be a part of it and where this group of people is heading.
