What lovely people. Briefly, we visited their shop to support a cleric friend who winters in Ghana. Thanks to the generosity of the community, we drove off with a car-load of vestments and liturgical furnishings for churches in Africa. In addition to their kindness, if you're not looking to do mission work overseas, their gift shop has a large collection of eclectic treasures in a spotless store, at reasonable to very low prices. There are Christmas and birthday presents for lovers of the unusual, the charming and the religious, and bargains to be found. Parking is available outside the gift store building, so you don't need to park across the road at the Madonna House main parking lot. Check their web site for hours of availability or, better yet, phone ahead to be sure they're open. They're an hour away from anywhere and everywhere, but they're worth a drive once in a while to look at what's in the shop and to visit with the community.

I stayed for 1 week at Madonna house at the beginning of November. The reason for my stay was I needed a place to unplug from the world and deepen my relationship with God. Upon showing up to Madonna house I was immediately greeted by the members and everyone was very kind and hospitable. The dorms were comfortable and the other visitors were very nice and thought provoking throughout my stay. The members and priests on site were nothing short of amazing and were truly inspiring as they lived out the Gospel teachings of Jesus in a way I’ve never experienced before. The food was great, the work we did each day on the farm and in the main house was rewarding, and the spirit was present and alive throughout my entire week. Did I mention how beautiful the location is? Absolutely breathtaking scenery… If you’re looking for a spiritual awakening or you’re discerning something in your life I would highly recommend staying here. You’ll fall in love! 5/5 stars! I want to go back.

What can I say about Madonna House? Changed my life. First, by the Grace of God through the Intercession of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, I reverted back to the Catholic Church and then I experienced miraculous emotional healing from forgotten past trauma through the Intercession of Our Lady of Combermere. I also shared many laughs and meaningful conversations with the great crew over there in the sticks! If you want to experience Agape Love, God's Merciful Love, go to Our Lady's House in Combermere, ON. God Bless!

Imagine going to a place that accepts you as you are, doesn't ask personal questions, including what faith you have (or not); a place that is trying to be as poor and simple as Christ, which includes following St Benedict's exhortation, 'Let every guest be received as Christ' but is not a monastery … and you begin to get a picture of Madonna House. Of course, along with this, you sleep in a dormitory, use outside toilets (camping style!) and one thing is asked - that you share in the Community life, you rise when they rise, go to the chapel when they do, eat with them, and so on. Don't worry, there's a bus out daily if you find it too much on any level and they'll take you to it with the same spirit they welcomed you with! I have visited Madonna House more times than I can count over the years. (in fact I'm definitely over 35yrs, so they're careful what work they give me!) I have worked in the laundry, the farm, the clothing room and other physical tasks. Always, I come away feeling hopeful and encouraged. Our society presumes a 'who needs God anyway?' attitude. Madonna House just wouldn't exist without deep faith in God, His Son Jesus and His Blessed Mother. They are mendicants, entirely dependent on the goodness of others. These women, men and priests that make up Madonna House are a canonical community within the Catholic Church under the Bishop of Pembroke. They take promises of poverty, chastity and obedience; the priests say mass in the local parishes and do a lot of listening/spiritual guidance when asked. But enough - if in doubt, why not go and see for yourself! Sue Lines

Great place for discernment for phycically and mentally healthy people (18-35 year olds). Stay is free. You are immediately involved in the life alongside people who have lived there for 50 years. The day after you arrive you may learn to be a cook, how to fold laundry, how to make a bed, how to grow plants, how to change a tire, how to be a lumberjack, carpenter, electrician, farmer or plumber. And the best part about it.... You will learn how to make all of these things a prayer. I couldn't recommend this place highly enough. One week minimum stay.

Wonderful Christian hospitality imbued with divine worship. God is very present here. Ideal place to enter into for a few days, weeks or months with the right discernment. Daily access to the sacraments.

Amazing community of lay men, lay women, and priests. They host guest workers, summer youth program, discerned and priest retreats from one week to one year, run local shops and retreats and family camps, and live a Christ-centred Nazareth spirituality, with true humility and charity.
