The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is a Catholic building in the town of Arizpe, located in the center of the state of Sonora, Mexico. Its construction began in 1646 at what was then the mission of Our Lady of the Assumption of Aritpa. After the Jesuit priests and missionaries Jerónimo de la Canal and Ignacio Molarja founded the mission of Our Lady of the Assumption of Aritpa in 1646, construction began on this church as a place of congregation for the evangelization of the native Opata people. De la Canal was in charge of its construction, and it was dedicated by both missionaries to the Assumption of Mary that same year. Father Suárez was temporarily in charge of preaching to the local Opata people. Their missions included San Ignacio in Sinoquipe and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Chinapa. According to records, the first baptisms date back to 1648. In 1650, the missionary Felipe Esgrecho was appointed to charge, assisted by Ignacio Molarja. That same year, Father Suárez returned to Arizpe, where he died and was buried in the church. Construction work was carried out on the church in 1653. In 1678, the Visitor Juan Zapata described it as beautiful and the best-equipped in the entire province. Father Esgrecho was replaced in 1692 by Father Antonio Leal. Then, in 1694, Francisco Javier Mora was appointed to charge. He was replaced in 1720 by Cristóbal de Cañas, who remained until 1731, being the last person to take charge of the mission until the expulsion of the Jesuits. After the expulsion of the Jesuits, the Franciscans took over the mission in 1768. In 1779, the Diocese of Sonora and Sinaloa was established by papal decree, and the church was consecrated as a cathedral, its dedication changed to Our Lady of Loreto. In 1783, Bishop Antonio de los Reyes established it as the Cathedral of Sonora, and it remained the seat of the diocese until 1844, when the eleventh Bishop of Sonora, José María de Jesús Rico, moved the seat to the town of Hermosillo, and the church was downgraded to a parish.

A jewel of a Sonoran church! An imposing, magnificent, and important tourist site on the Juan Bautista de Anza Route (the Jesuit mission route of Father Bartolomé Castaños). Inside, two of the last remaining Baroque altarpieces in northern Mexico are preserved: well-preserved and marvelous! Furthermore, the remains of the conquistador Juan Bautista de Anza Becerro Nieto are interred here. Well-kept treasures of the desert state of Sonora!
