When I tried to assign to the Church of Cumuripa the name under which this Church of San Francisco Xavier de Cumuripa is dedicated, this correction was rejected. Therefore, I am publishing this account, which was published by Armando Quijada Hernández, “The Jesuits in the Pimería Baja” in Caminando por la Pimería Baja O’ob pajlobguim. Territorio e Identidad, Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico: 2009, pp. 70-71. I will now recount it: Father Diego de Guzmán was the first Jesuit missionary to enter the territory of the Lower Pima in 1610, baptizing children and the sick. But it wasn't until 1619 that evangelization truly began in the Pimería Baja region, with the arrival of missionaries Martín Burgencio and Francisco Oliñano. They traveled up the Tecoripa River and founded the towns of San Francisco Xavier de Cumuripa, San Francisco de Borja de Tecoripa, and San Ignacio de Suaqui Grande. The first Jesuit mission in the Pimería Baja was San Francisco Xavier de Cumuripa; the original town is now submerged beneath the waters of the Álvaro Obregón Dam (El Oviachi). Alberto Francisco Pradeau mentions it as part of the Rectorate of San Francisco de Borja. Cumuripa was served by Father Benito Antonio Romeo, who was also in charge of the Presidio of San Carlos Buenavista in 1767.
