On March 16, 1694, during the Third Expedition of Eusebio Kino, accompanied by Captain and Explorer Juan Mateo Mange y Jironza, they traveled down the Magdalena River, where it disappears at what Mange named Altar. Some History of the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe: The town of Altar was founded as a military outpost by Captain Bernardo de Urrea, Governor and Captain General of the Provinces of Sonora and Sinaloa, under the name of Santa Gertrudis de Altar, in 1775. After its founding, a small religious hall was built, also named Santa Gertrudis. This was later called the Presidio of Our Lady of Guadalupe de Altar. Religious services were offered by Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries. The chapel was relocated to its current site, with construction completed in the mid-20th century.

It is the temple of our saints where spirituality reigns, so that migrants passing through may have a dedicated time to pray to the Virgin and to God. The church of the immigrants is very beautiful, and God blesses its citizens from the territory of Altar, Sonora. It is the right place to pray, especially for the Blessed Sacrament. Amen.

I intended to visit Altar for the church. I encountered a bad atmosphere; not even the police officer would give me any advice, and worse, I even received a ticket for entering a street without signs. A terrible experience for a tourist 👎🏻 …
