Our family has recently wrestled with where our former non denominational church landed on some tertiary (non salvation) issue. While researching what God’s word says, God drew us to come to understand our views align with the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) views on things like the modern state of Israel… LCMS views Israel as a secular country, not as the spiritual "Israel" of the Old Testament, and believes that both Jews and gentiles need Jesus Christ for salvation. The LCMS distinguishes between the political nation of Israel and the spiritual people of God, emphasizing that eternal life comes through faith in Jesus. They hold that any promise to Israel was about God's Son, Jesus, not about land, and that salvation is available to all people, including Israelis, through faith in Christ. Grace Lutheran Church teaches that sacraments are the "means of grace," which are tangible ways God delivers His grace, forgiveness, and salvation to believers through faith. While sacraments are a primary way grace is received, they also emphasize that the Word of God (preached or written) is a means of grace, and that faith is necessary to receive the full benefit of the sacraments. • Sacraments as means of grace: The LCMS defines sacraments as rites commanded by Christ that convey forgiveness of sins and strengthen faith. ◦ Baptism: Through baptism, a person receives forgiveness of sins and is made a child of God. ◦ Holy Communion: In the Lord's Supper, believers receive the true body and blood of Christ for the forgiveness of sins and strengthening of their faith. ◦ Confession and Absolution: This is another sacrament where Christ gives believers the authority to forgive sins in His name. • Role of faith: The LCMS teaches that faith is crucial for receiving the benefits of the sacraments. For example, the Bible states that baptism saves through faith, and the act of baptism itself, without faith, does not save (though the faith can be present even in infants). Similarly, in Holy Communion, receiving it without a contrite heart can be to one's detriment. • Other means of grace: The LCMS also considers the Word of God (in the Bible and in preaching) as a means of grace, noting that it also conveys God's power and grace to bring about faith and repentance. We married in 1997 from Baptist backgrounds and have been members of Church nearly our entire lives. God prompted us to question why we grew up believing Israel as a nation was somehow vital to protect. While diving into God’s word, we ended up discovering a lot about church history that lead us to Martin Luther! The Bible has never been more alive, personal and understandable to us. We never understood the beauty of the liturgy and hymns until we experienced Grace Lutheran Church! It’s a small congregation but what beautiful family we have gained by joining! I adore absolutely everything about our church home!! (We began attending in October 2025 and joined this past March!). Come join us! Let me know if you read this review or have questions!
