Bernice Jacobs, wife of Charles Jacobs, founded the Tuesday/Thursday Pre-School program at Merkel Church of Christ many years ago. All 3 of my daughters were students (est. 1998-2005). One of them became a teacher and my granddaughter is currently a student. Merkel Church of Christ with the ambition, drive, and love of Bernice & Charles Jacobs, created a cornerstone for our little ones throughout the Merkel, Texas community.

The Church of Christ is a Christian movement that seeks to follow the teachings and practices of the early New Testament church. Rather than being a single centralized denomination, it is made up of independent congregations that share similar beliefs and values. These churches emphasize the authority of the Bible as the sole guide for faith and practice, striving to restore what they see as the original form of Christianity. One of the defining features of Churches of Christ is their commitment to simplicity in worship. Services typically include singing (often a cappella, without instrumental accompaniment), prayer, reading from scripture, preaching, and the observance of the Lord’s Supper, which is usually taken every Sunday. Baptism by immersion is considered essential for salvation, symbolizing the forgiveness of sins and a person’s commitment to Christ. Leadership within the Church of Christ is usually local rather than hierarchical. Congregations are typically overseen by elders, with deacons assisting in various roles. There is no central governing body, which allows each church to operate independently while still maintaining shared beliefs with others in the movement. The Church of Christ places strong emphasis on living a moral and faithful life, encouraging members to follow biblical teachings in everyday actions. Community, fellowship, and personal responsibility in faith are also key aspects. Members often engage in Bible study, outreach, and service activities within their communities. Overall, the Church of Christ is characterized by its focus on biblical authority, simple worship practices, and a desire to reflect the structure and spirit of the early Christian church.
