I have appreciated Memorial Baptist Church for opening its space to the community for pickleball, but I had an experience that was handled in a way that left me deeply hurt and discouraged. During a regular play session—where players rotate partners based on wins and losses—two players openly discussed who was “stuck” playing with me because I am not as advanced as they are. The third player told me that “no one wants to play with you,” though he added that he would. The comments were humiliating and unnecessary. When I shared what happened with the coordinator’s wife, she relayed it to her husband. Instead of addressing the situation privately at a later time, the coordinator chose to speak with me while I was “on deck,” meaning next to play as soon as a court opened. The conversation was emotional, and while we were in the middle of resolving it, I was called to the court. I needed just a few more seconds to finish and compose myself, but the other players were impatient and insistent that play begin. What was most upsetting was that the coordinator made it seem as though the situation was my fault—because I chose to play there and because my skill level is lower—rather than addressing the inappropriate and unkind behavior of the players who made the remarks. To my knowledge, nothing was said to the individuals who made the comments; the focus was placed solely on me. Pickleball should be welcoming and inclusive, especially in a church setting. Players of all skill levels should be treated with respect, and no one should feel embarrassed or blamed for simply participating. Because of how this was handled, I was so upset that I have since stopped attending. I share this feedback in the hope that future situations are handled with greater sensitivity, privacy, and fairness. A church-hosted program should model kindness, sportsmanship, and care for the dignity of everyone involved.

I've been going to Memorial since 2018. From 2020-end of 2024 I was the youth minister. Recently I spoke with the pastor about God calling me a different direction. Though it was hard, he was encouraging. The entire church has been very loving and encouraging during this transitioning phase. God's will and surrendering to Him is big for Memorial. If you are looking for a church who encourages and love, Memorial is the place for you. They send texts to check in, prepare meals after you have experienced a death, call when they noticed you have been struggling, pray for you, and just love on you. They are full of people from different areas and backgrounds. They all have different testimonies and are willing to share.
