When I First Remember(Old Bethel United Methodist Church)

Every Thursday night between June and October, the Old Bethel church hosts a wonderful performance. A group of local actors and artists combine character portrayals, song, dance and storytelling to express both the pain and suffering of the enslaved people and the hope and joy that they still found in the world, their culture, and their arts. It's both an uplifting and upbeat performance, with some incredible singing, and also an intense expression of the pain of slavery. I really wish I could better express the experience, but you have to go see it. Better yet, all of this is done in a historic church, where enslaved people attended church and then inherited the church in freedom, and the history is woven into the performance I found this as part of the Moja Arts Festival, on the last night of the show for this season, and I wish I had found it sooner so I could take everyone I know.
