The chapel at Parris Island honestly became one of the only places during boot camp where it felt like you could breathe for a minute without somebody immediately screaming at you. After weeks of nonstop chaos, stress, and Drill Instructors moving at full volume from sunrise to lights out, walking into the chapel felt like entering an entirely different world. For a little while, everything slowed down and you got a rare chance to clear your head and just exist without being under constant pressure. One thing I will never forget is how fast all of us recruits suddenly became experts at memorizing church songs because it was one of the few places we could temporarily escape the madness outside. I probably still remember every word to songs I had never even heard before boot camp. And of course hearing “Semper Fi” by Trace Adkins in that environment hit completely different than it ever would back home. Something about hearing that song while standing there in the middle of recruit training surrounded by exhausted recruits trying to earn the title of Marine just made it stick with you. The chapel was not just a religious place during boot camp. It was honestly a mental reset button and one of the few moments where recruits could feel human again for a little while before stepping back out into the chaos of Parris Island.

A great place to get away from the Drill Instructors for a little while.
