Star of the Sea Church is easily one of the best Roman Catholic parishes in the USA. Under the leadership of the pastor, Fr. Joseph Illo (who has rebuilt the church and revitalized its spiritual life), the parish is an oasis of prayer in a busy, tech-obsessed city like San Francisco. There are 3 daily Masses (including the traditional Latin Mass offered daily), a beautiful schola, public recitation of the Holy Rosary, devotion to the Holy Face, 16 shrines of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a growing Catholic classical school, opportunities to directly serve the poor, hospitality ministries, an active Knights of Columbus and Filipino ministry, religious education, especially those new and interested to the Catholic faith, seasonal lecture series, pro-life and family outreach, and more. Father Illo and the other parish clergy, preach with firmness of doctrine and morals, combined with a gentleness and pastoral sense to help people in their journey of sanctification. Aside from Holy Mass, there is one spiritual practice here that is most likely responsible for the organic and spiritual growth of the church— perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. Seven days a week, 24 hours a day, the faithful gather to pray to Our Lord present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. All of the active ministries any parish offers cannot compare to offering time and space to worship the Eucharistic Lord. In fact, you might argue that without this “one thing necessary”, all of the other ministries can quickly turn into activism. Star of the Sea Church is a gem. It’s one of the few churches that I would say is worth moving for, in order to join. Even when parishioners leave SF for entirely understandable reason reasons, they often mention how much they miss this church. It is the jewel of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, if not its beating heart. If you are considering a move to San Francisco or if you are a current resident of the Bay Area, you ought to check out the parish and join in celebration of the Sacred Liturgy. This is a parish worth basing one’s social, familial, moral, an intellectual life around, which isn’t always a given today. Mass times on Sunday: 8:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m. (lots of families here), 11:30 a.m. TLM (Latin Mass), 7:30 p.m. (great for young adults, those who work on Sunday).

In awe of the breathtaking beauty of Mama Mary in all her titles from around the world 💙 Each statue radiates her tender love in a unique way. The 24/7 Adoration Chapel filled my heart with peace, and the heavenly voices of the choir made the experience even more sacred. Truly a place where heaven touches earth! …

It's such a beautiful church! We went on Easter Sunday and got there one hour early to eat a small snack, also there is a small playground to play on, the people we met were nice. The music was calming,I wonder if they use the trumpets each mass besides the Easter Sunday one? Also if you go be sure to look at the ceiling, there is a beautiful mural of Mary.

We live in Santa Rosa, California, and Jefferson City, Missouri. That being said, our first stop in San Francisco, when we visit, is Star of the Sea Church. We miss the interior when we are away. We miss the peace, always. The most magnificent church we have every worshipped at. My daughter and I attend church every day wherever we are while traveling, I travel for work, we have never been to a more majestic church.

Beautiful "Star of the Sea" - A lovely welcoming Roman Catholic Church. Parish school closed in 2019; traditional classical education starting in 2021. One of many parish churches, built by the faithful San Francisco Catholics of yesteryear. A lovely space to pray and worship. May your fondest prayers be answered, may you be blessed with calm and goodwill.
